Going back to the settlement of Eastchester in 1665, the laws laid out in the Eastchester (or “Ten Farms”) Covenant were meant to be “a framework for a good society, a mission statement or blueprint on what type of community our 17th century forefathers wanted their community to be,” including the education of children according to Eastchester historian, Richard Forliano. This document (housed at Eastchester Town Hall) and it’s provisions are complex in contextual nature, but their aim was to form a supportive society.
In a more recent era, The New York Community Trust, founded in 1923, was established a full 4 years after The Community Fund.
We may just be the oldest — and we can certainly lay claim to the intended philosophical standards of community living in a way that supports a thriving population. Stay tuned.
